Norma Virginia Deputy, 89
Norma Virginia Deputy, 89, a resident of Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community, died Thursday, September 2, 2010. She had been resident there for six years.
Mrs. Deputy was born on September 3, 1920 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Dan G. and Irene Heatwole Shank. She was a homemaker, worked for Frank and Harman Hatchery, and was caretaker for Dr. Preston. She was a member of Harrisonburg Mennonite Church.
On March 15, 1938, she married John Deputy who preceded her in death on December 19, 2008.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Holder and husband Thomas of Manhattan, Kansas and Lois Huffman of The Villages, Florida; a sister, Dorothy Showalter and husband Mark of Broadway; a brother in law, Byard Deputy of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Jill Nix and Dustin Huffman and one great granddaughter, Anabelle Huffman.
Pastors Shirlee K. Yoder and Sam Janzen will conduct a memorial service at Strite Auditorium at Crestwood of VMRC on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2040 Deyerle Avenue, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801.

Mahlon M. Horst, 89
Harrisonburg
Mahlon Martin Horst, 89, a resident of Oak Lea Nursing Home died August 31, 2010.
Mr. Horst was born on July 30, 1921, in Hagerstown, Maryland and was the son of the late Martin L. and Mary Baer Horst. He worked as a church planter/pastor with the Virginia Mennonite missions in Eastern Kentucky and founding pastor and member of the Lucas Hollow Mennonite Church in Stanley, Virginia. He and his wife moved to the Harrisonburg are in the mid 1990’s and attended Timberville Mennonite Church.
On September 8, 1946, he married the former Leah Shank who survives.
Also surviving are children, Kenneth Horst and wife Sue, Harrisonburg; Judith Kauffman and husband Paul, Granada, Spain; Gerald Horst and wife Marjo, Aurora, Ohio; Karen Burkholder and husband Dale, Mt. Crawford; fourteen grandchildren, Patrick Horst, Christopher Horst, Alicia Horst, Stephen Horst, Kristin Bucher, Kenton Kauffman, Kirk Kauffman, Brandon Horst, Aaron Horst, Jordan Horst, Anthony Burkholder, Bradley Burkholder, Joshua Burkholder, and Andre Burkholder; and fourteen great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Fred Rodes, Tony Cubbage, Sam Cordeman and Daryl Yoder will conduct a funeral service Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 2p.m. at Calvary Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at Lindale Cemetery with Arlen Benner officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday evening at the Bradley Funeral Home, Luray from 7p.m. until 9p.m. Friends may call at any time after noon on Friday.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6p.m. until 9p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.

Leon L. Shoemaker, 58
Leon Leonard Shoemaker, 58, a resident of Singers Glen, died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab.
Mr. Shoemaker was born on April 21, 1952 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Marshall and Frances Bare Shoemaker. He worked at Standard Parts and Ray Carr Tire. He also owned and operated his own excavating business. He loved his cats, going to yard sales, playing bingo, and hunting. Leon was a loving husband.
On June 15, 1991 he married the former Barbara Foltz who survives.
Also surviving is one brother, Lonnie Shoemaker and wife Lisa of Singers Glen.
Reverend Patricia Covington and John Schaefer will conduct a funeral service Monday morning at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from seven until eight at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.

Nellie V. Early, 98
Nellie Virginia Keller Early, a resident of Dayton, died Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Early was born on April 13, 1916 in Dayton, and was the daughter of the late William and Sallie Simmers Keller. She was a homemaker and spent her entire life in the Dayton community. She was a member of the Dayton Mennonite Church.
On September 28, 1938, she married Byard Early who preceded her in death on March 19, 2008.
Surviving are two sons, Allen K. Early of Harrisonburg, Roy W. Early and wife Phyllis of Dayton; a daughter, Phyllis E. Kauffman and husband Lowell of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Lelia Eberly of Harrisonburg, Lorene Layman of Dayton; six grandchildren, Kristine Rosolina, Brenda Layton, Vicki Simonetti, Keith Kauffman, Joseph Early, Andrea Early and twelve great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Early was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Donna Early, two brothers, Harry Keller, Warren Keller, and two sisters, Evangeline Showalter and Orpha Keller.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bank Mennonite Cemetery. Pastor Daryl Driver will conduct a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at the Dayton Mennonite Church.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 at McMullen Funeral Home.

Cynthia Lilly Hilbert, 83
Cynthia Lilly Hilbert, 83, a resident of Dayton, died Sunday, August 22, 2010.
Mrs. Hilbert was born on May 30, 1927 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Reverend Malcolm and Garrett Leake Lilly. She was a homemaker and member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church.
On January 19, 1943, she married Weldon C. Hilbert who preceded her in death on July 5, 2010.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Druen and husband Raymond of Gore, Virginia, Elaine Estep and husband Tom of Dayton and Sherry Clark and husband Sonny of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Virgil Lilly of Radford, Virginia, Henry Lilly of Harrisonburg, one sister, Esther Tadlock of Quitman, Georgia; two grandchildren, Michele Estep of Dayton, Scott Clark and wife Crista of Dayton and two great-grandchildren, Rylee Clark and Reston Clark.
Mrs. Hilbert was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Phyllis Jean Hilbert.
Reverend Rob Hoskins and Wendell “Sonny” Henkel will conduct a funeral service on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the Clover Hill United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery.

James Allen Ritter, 50, Harrisonburg died August 21, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Ritter was born on October 27, 1959, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Clayton Ritter and Elsie Witmer Ritter. He worked in the past for Quality Excavating and I.D. McCary. He was an avid sports enthusiast and a loyal Eastern Mennonite University Royals Basketball fan. Mr. Ritter attended the Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene.
On June 24, 2006, he married Deborah L. Ritter who survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Brenda Rexrode and husband Willard, Bridgewater and their daughter, Kathryn Rexrode Moats and husband Doyle Jr.; a brother Clayton Eugene Ritter and wife Annette, Harrisonburg and their children, Ryan and wife, Melissa Ritter and son Adam, Jason Ritter, Leah Conrad and husband, Camron; a sister, Sandra Lucas and husband Steven, Harrisonburg and her children, Amanda and Adam Adongo and their son, Alex; and Laura Cruz Lobo.
Pastors Roger Dove and Craig Maven will conduct a memorial service Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from seven until eight-thirty at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.
