John D. Wittig, 79

Broadway

            John Darl Wittig, 79, a resident of Broadway, passed away January 14, 2012 at his home.

            Mr. Wittig was born on March 15, 1932 in Fulks Run and was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Ressie Myrtle Crider Wittig.  He was the owner and operator of Wittig Construction from 1975 until 1997. After his retirement, he was an avid gardener and will be remembered for generously sharing his produce with friends and family.  He was a member of the Cedar Run Church of the Brethren. 

            On July 2, 1955, he married the former Shelvy Smith who survives.

            Also surviving are five children, Kevin Wittig and wife Cindy, Singers Glen; Sherrie Bykowski and husband Brent, Mechanicsville; Candy Hensley and husband Jay, Mt. Solon; Tony Wittig, Broadway; and Jamie Dove and husband Cory, Singers Glen; two sisters, Louise Brunk, Harrisonburg; Arlene Andes and husband Allen, Timberville; one brother, Clarence Wittig and wife Anna Lee, Fulks Run; six grandchildren, Lauren Bykowski, Ashley Bykowski, Hannah Hensley, Connor Hensley, Justin Dove and Jessica Dove.

            A sister Eleanor Grace Wittig preceded him in death.

            Reverend Richard H. Yowell will conduct a funeral service Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Run Church of the Brethren.  Burial will follow at Whitmer Cemetery, Fulks Run, Virginia. 

            The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6p.m. until 8p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.

            Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Run Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 683, Broadway, VA  22815 or to the Broadway Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 666, Broadway, Virginia  22815.
