John P. Ruppe, 65 Harrisonburg John P. Ruppe, 65, a resident of Harrisonburg died October 26, 2008. Mr. Ruppe was born on November 12, 1942, in Passaic, New Jersey and was the son of the late Ernest E. and Olga Christofersen Ruppe. In High School, he was valedictorian and an Eagle Scout. He taught English at the University of Wyoming and several other colleges, was a carpenter for 15 years and was a careful writer. He prided himself on forging ahead, plugging along, and finishing what he started. He ran four marathons in mid-life all under three hours (New York, Boston, Golden Gate, Oakland) and continued to hike and camp. He served as a trail maintainer with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club in the Shenandoah National Park and spent many happy hours on his trail, the One Mile Run Trail. His trail maintaining, hiking, and camping ended in the Spring of 2008 when he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig?s Disease). As the disease progressed, he could no longer speak or swallow. As his limbs and respiratory system began to fail, his endurance failed, and he took his own life on Sunday, October 26. On April 22, 1995, he married Jane Hannah Bazuin Ruppe who survives. Also surviving are three step-daughters, Emily E. Bateson, Arlington; Mary A. Bateson, Hampton, and Margaret S. Bateson, Ridgeland, South Carolina; a brother, Erik Ruppé, San Francisco , California. A graveside service will be held Sunday, November 2, 2008 at East Lawn Memorial Gardens at 2p.m with Rev. Stuart Wood, of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, officiating.
