He served as a trail maintainer with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club in the Shenandoah National Park and spent many happy hours on his trail, the One Mile Run Trail. His trail maintaining, hiking, and camping ended in the Spring of 2008 when he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig?s Disease). As the disease progressed, he could no longer speak or swallow. As his limbs and respiratory system began to fail, his endurance failed, and he took his own life on Sunday, October 26. On April 22, 1995, he married Jane Hannah Bazuin Ruppe who survives.
